Saturday mornings are the best time to visit if you want to experience the vibrant life of an Andean market outdoors. Bring cash in small denominations.
To enjoy your visit, we recommend considering a few things:
- Acclimatization to Altitude: If you’ve just arrived from a lower altitude, be cautious as La Paz is over 3,600 meters above sea level. Take it easy the first few days, avoid physical exertion, and drink plenty of water. Coca tea is excellent for preventing altitude sickness. Do not schedule extensive walks or heavy meals.
- Use the Cable Car: Take advantage of Mi Teleférico to move around the city while enjoying panoramic views. It’s one of the best ways to get to know La Paz from above.
- Use Safe Taxis: To get around the city, use trusted taxis; better if recommended by your hotel, or look for radio taxis that display their phone number on the taxi itself. Uber is very slow, better use Yango. Avoid hailing taxis on the street, especially at night.
- Carefully Try Local Cuisine: During your visit, you will find very tempting street food stalls, but remember that the people of La Paz have iron stomachs and have built many defenses over their lifetimes. Choose carefully what to eat, look for food that does not contain raw ingredients, and it’s better to go to recommended restaurants.
- The Weather is a Mystery in La Paz: Due to its extreme altitude and mountainous geography, La Paz experiences rapid and drastic temperature changes. We have several microclimates in different areas and an unpredictable climate that can vary from cold to warm on the same day. Additionally, the seasons are not clearly defined, with sudden rains even in the dry season, making the weather hard to predict. Always carry a sweater or jacket even if it seems very hot.
La Paz is a city that invites you to discover its history and traditions at every step, offering travelers authentic and unforgettable experiences. Each of these places leaves a mark on those who visit them, showcasing the rich heritage and dynamism of a city that is much more than its altitude and imposing geography. Welcome to La Paz, the wonder city of a thousand colors!!!
